Mom Life is OVERWHELMING Sometimes!
Hey ladies! Abena Charity here and I wanted to share something that I've been struggling with as a new mom. Being overwhelmed! This can be a difficult place sometimes but remembering that you don't have to take on too much at once can be so helpful. I was talking to another first time mom the other day who reached out because she wasn't feeling like herself and the everyday tasks of "moming"was making her feel overwhelmed. It made me extremely proud that she even took the initiative to reach out to her tribe to support her when she was feeling low. Having the courage to express to someone that “although I make everything look like it’s easy and all good, it’s not all good inside right now." This really made me think of you personally, and so many momma's who feel the same way. As a mom we're constantly in charge of handling every part of our child’s life and balancing our family. It's so easy to put ourselves on the back burner which sometimes can leave us feeling overwhelmed.
I joke about it sometimes, but being a mom feels like sliding down a wall as you’re crying your hardest cry. I’ve felt that way, and I’m sure you can relate to that exact experience at some point on your journey. But I wanted to provide some encouragement and some tips on how I handle being overwhelmed.
3 things to focus on when your feeling overwhelmed:
Lean on your tribe/ support system.
Do one special thing for yourself every week.
Shift your mindset after feeling the negative emotions
As cheesy as it sounds, sometimes we need to sit down and write a list that goes over the pros and cons of how we are feeling and why we feel overwhelmed. I created this worksheet that helps me come to terms with all of my feelings.
On the pro side I write down all the things that I am doing well as a mom and all the things that I am accomplishing every day. Then on the con side I write what I’m struggling with and the areas that I can do better in. Now usually people compare the pros and the cons but once I have my list I turn them into actions.
For example:
Pro: I have people to support me.
Con: I feel sleep deprived all the time.
Action: I feel sleep deprived all the time and need to lean on the people I have to support me ( even if it's 30 minutes )
I hope you find this worksheet helpful! Another reminder: You're a great mom ! Take a few deep breaths and try to focus on one task at a time. Please don't hesitate to reach out to your friends and family . You don't have to go through this alone. I'm rooting for you, and I love you!
